College of Medicine Council Member Dr Catherine Zollman co-authors ‘landmark’ paper on the safe practice of acupuncture in integrative oncology

A new ‘landmark’ paper on the recommendations for the safe practice of acupuncture in integrative oncology has been released, following around two years of research by 15 international experts in the fields of integrative oncology and/or acupuncture.

The paper, Acupuncture in cancer care: recommendations for safe practice, was led by Dr Catherine Zollman, a College of Medicine council member who is medical lead for the Penny Brohn UK cancer charity, alongside Beverley de Valois and Teresa Young, from the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust incorporating Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

College of Medicine council member Dr Catherine Zollman, who is medical lead for the Penny Brohn UK cancer charity, was one of the three lead authors on the paper, which collaborated with 15 international experts over a two-year period

It is the first international, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed recommendations for the safe practice of acupuncture in integrative oncology.

‘They are intended for use by any practitioner of acupuncture using any form of acupuncture and working in any setting, whether in an integrative oncology setting or independently in the community.

‘They may also be used to inform oncology healthcare professionals, policy makers, and people with cancer about the safe practice of acupuncture.’
