Nigel Hewett FRCGP OBE qualified in general practice and then spent two years as a volunteer training barefoot doctors in the Amazon jungle of Peru. He has worked with homeless people since 1990. In 1997 he was the founding Chair of Leicester Single Homeless multi-disciplinary team and in 2000 he set up the full-time Leicester Homeless Primary Healthcare Service.

In 2009 he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Homeless. In the same year, Dr Hewett set up University College London Hospital’s London Pathway homeless team.
