Changing the conversation about health

Honorary Senior Fellowship

Michael McIntyre has been awarded the College of Medicine’s inaugural Honorary Senior Fellowship.  Michael has worked as a herbalist and acupuncturist for over 30 years.  In 1987, he helped to launch the first UK school of Chinese Herbal Medicine and subsequently was co-Principal of this School until 2000.  Michael has also held the position of Chair of the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association.  He is a life member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine as well as an honorary member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy.  Having helped to set up the first UK university courses in Western Herbal Medicine, and Chinese Herbal Medicine, Michael was awarded an honorary doctorate by Middlesex University in 2005.  He is the author of several books and has regularly contributed to articles and television programmes on the subject of herbal medicine.

The herbal world owes Michael a huge thanks.  During a critical stage in its professional development, and following the recommendations from the House of Lords, Michael stepped up and gave all his waking hours to making the case for statutory regulation of herbal practitioners.  That case remains extraordinarily substantial and only failed on political whims.  It is in the bank in any future progression and as Michael’s legacy.
